APSIA #6: Beyond Unreasonable People

Several weeks I ago (around May)  I couldn’t attend the whole session of APSIA training which concern about scientific research. I attended the class in the second session because there was another activity in the morning. Fortunately, in the early June I could attend full session of another APSIA training. The training was held in seminar room at 7th floor of  Universitas Indonesia library. And theme arose was social entrepreneurship.

For the training, APSIA invited Yuri Pratama as the speaker, experienced socio-preneur in Indonesia. He is the founder and owner of Urchin Indonesia, the first Indonesia urchin farming. Establishing the company, He collaborated with local farmers in the north of Jakarta Bay. From the activities, He got some national and international achievement.

The training was divided by two session. First, Yuri presented exciting presentation concerning on social entrepreneurship. Second, He guided the participants to make a business model of social entrepreneurship. I got insightful information all day long.

In social enterpreneur, the base of company’s establishing starts from understanding society’s problem. The motivation of being socio-preneur is to solve society’s problems. As an opportunity, from the problem socio-preneur may apply a business. Therefor, Social entrepreneurship is an effort to solve society’s problem using business method approach.

It is definition of social entrepreneurship based from Yuri’s experience as a socio-preneur. He think that  socio-preneurs have to maximize an opportunity from nothing to be something priceless. They should give benefit and value added to the society. For the effort, he uses philosophy of berlian that stands for bersama (togetherness), lestari (nature), and amanah (responsible).

Social entrepreneurship is different with business entrepreneurship. Business has profit orientation, but the orientation of social entrepreneurship is social welfare.  Business is built and developed by one figure such as Abu Rizal Bakrie, Ciputra, Liem Soe Liyong, Antono Gunawan. However social enterpreneurship is developed by togetherness foundation.

It is not easy to be socio-preneur. They don’t get any incentive such as profit and wealth in business. Social entrepreneurship is not charity, philanthropy, or even CSR. They don’t ask for donation to give handouts to the people need for help. They sacrifice their time, money, and energy to something that is unpredictable. There is no achievement and publication of their activities. Satisfaction only appears when they can see people’s smile. This is a power of unreasonable people.

Having discussed theoretically about social entrepreneurship, we continued the training to the second session. We were divided into several groups containing by two or three participants. As a practice, Yuri gave us three big problem in Indonesia. The first is about low economic activities in marginalized area. Second, illegal logging in Indonesia’s forest. Then, unemployment problem arose from ex-cons. From those problems, we had to choose one and analyze it.

Each group had to give a solution to the problem, but of course, using business method approach. Then the solution was poured into business canvas model. In the canvas we need to analyze some parameters on business. First, we started to find value propositions of the business. Then, for distribution, we defined the customer relationship, channel, and customer target. We also analyzed key partner, key activities, and key resources. For the financial analysis, we constructed cost structure and revenue streams
